New Project Ideas

Flash Finder

The problem: Sometimes, UHM students who are from the mainland do not know what kind of activities they can do at UH during their free time besides studying. This is the same for locals, who get bored because they have done everything they can think of.

The solution: Flash Finder is a program where UH students and can find activities and events to do with others on the island. Students can set up notifications when a new spot or activity is posted. Students can also narrow searches down by adding tags based on their likes, where they are from on the mainland, or what high school they went to. Events and activities can also be displayed on a calendar.

Vending Vote

The Problem: Over half of the items in the vending machines on campus are liked by absolutely no one. Based on what’s left in the vending machine at the end of the day, it’s clear to every student and the staff who restocks the vending machine what sells and what doesn’t. Unfortunately, making changes to the vending machine will be at best, random, without input from the students themselves.

The Solution: Introducing Vending Vote: the democratic solution for UH Manoa students to get their favorite items inside of the vending machine. Staff will no longer be guessing as to what next hot item they should be putting for the week, now students will help the staff decide. Students who create an account in Vending Vote will participate in a monthly “voting game”, which involves the following steps:

  1. Nomination period. During this time, students and vendors can nominate foods for the vending machine. Admins can ensure that the nominations are appropriate and feasible. The vendors must indicate how easily they can make a food item available.

  2. Voting period. During this time, students can vote for their top 5 foods. They can also try to get their friends to vote.

  3. Contest winners. During this time, the site indicates what foods won, and publicize when and how the vendors will make those foods available.

Group Grinds

The problem: Food delivery companies such as BiteSquad and UberEats charge extra for delivery if the price of the food does not reach a minimum.

The solution: Group Grinds allows UH students to communicate with other students in the same predicament to order food without having to deal with the extra charges. On this app, students would be able to see any delivery orders being made on campus and could join in the order by adding their own food items. Users will determine payment methods amongst themselves.

Students who like a particular restaurant can specify this in their preferences and be notified via text message whenever someone wants to order from that restaurant.

Gym Partner

The problem: many students exercise alone.

The solution: Gym Partner is a proposed final project idea that functions as a UH-specific fitness network, to promote the gym and its many offerings. Users will give their fitness information and schedules, and can organize with like-minded individuals and groups.

The app will provide knowledge about the specific capabilities of the UH Gym and ongoing group-based exercise activities.

Manoa Car Pool

The problem: There are too many cars and too little parking. Many students live far and many drive to school. As a result, there are many cars being driven by individual students and it’s a waste of gas and money as well as leaving no parking spaces for others.

The solution: The (application) allows for students to find other students that live near by and carpool to school. Moanoa students can login and create a profile to see other students that live within a specified radius and (application) will match students according to schedule and places they will be or other criterias they specify like interest or classes.

Once a profile is created, other can browse the profiles filtered by specific radius one might want to drive, classes that they might be in together or matches each other interest.

Students can also set up notifications to find out automatically when someone near them either wants a ride or is willing to give a ride, whichever they specify.

Manoa Math

The problem: Not all UH students are fond of learning math. We need a better way for students to be motivated while at the same time help them learn in a more friendly and fun environment.

The solution: Meteor offers great reactivity and seemless integration between client and server. It’s the perfect medium to create an online game with. We could create a multiplayer speed quiz game that matches players and quizzes them on math problems. Players can compete against and motivate each other real time and have fun while learning math.

Games can be tied to a specific course and time in the semester, so that playing the game will also help people get a better grade. Other games could be tied to specific events, such as interviewing for a CS job.

Bow Warrior Basics

The problem: As a student on campus, how do you learn the “basics” about a degree program? About the food services? About parking and commuting? About staying safe after dark? About the host culture?

The solution: Bow Warrior Basics is a crowd-sourced, dynamic “README” guide for introducing UH students to any and all topics relevent to the community for which introductory knowledge is difficult to come by. Students can both propose topic areas and provide content for those topic areas. Content can be voted up, down, or banned by administrators if innappropriate.

Game Buddies

The Problem: There are many anti-social gamers at UH Manoa. UH Manoa gamers generally just play with themselves or with their close group of friends prior to college. It is hard to find someone else with the same game interest and time frames of which they can play with each other. Therefore, Game Buddies is an application which tries to help anti-social gamers increase communication and social interaction between each other.

The Solution: Game Buddies allows students to login and create a profile indicating their gaming tastes, their gaming capabilities, their gaming goals (playing for fun or competitively / against or with each other), and their gaming times. The profile can include links to their gaming profiles containing their IGN, etc. (Ex. Steam, Blizzard, Maplestory, etc) Once a profile is created, other can browse the profiles filtered by specific gaming tastes, capabilities, goals, and times. Students can also be notified if a match has been found and has the option of contacting the person via the information that the matching person(s) provided. Admins can monitor the site for inappropriate content, create new categories of gaming tastes, goals, capabilities, and to ban anyone who violates the Terms of Use and Conditions. Both student and admins can log in with their UH account. Include a link to a discord page for Game Buddies so that people can interact with each other via a very widely used, popular VoIP application.
