Spring 2018 Student-generated project ideas

Here are additional project possibilities for Spring 2018.

Personalized Fitness

The problem: It can be difficult to fit a consistent fitness routine into an already packed college student schedule. Many people are intimidated by the idea of going to the gym to work-out. Also, the hours of the gym on campus sometimes don’t work out for a variety of schedules.

The solution: It would be helpful for UH students to have a centralized platform on which students and health and fitness professionals can post ideas for flexible and personalized fitness routines, things such as yoga etc. that can be done in one’s dorm room, or somewhere on campus. Students should be able to post their fitness goals and/or other constraints which can then be matched against the fitness routines available in the system. The system can also enable students to log their time, frequency of workouts, and other measures of progress. The system can show which routines are popular and provide user-generated reviews.

If you pick this project, you cannot name your app “Personalized Fitness”.

Language practice

The problem: UH has a second language requirement, but it is often difficult to find people to practice the language with, even though the large number of foreign students means there is a large potential pool of candidates (who might, in turn, want to practice their English).

The solution: The system will match up students who are fluent in English and need practice in a foreign language with students who are fluent in the foreign language but need practice in English. Students can create a profile with the language(s) they want to practice and constraints on when they can get together with another person. It can also be possible to meet virtually through Skype or some other communication app. The system will also provide example “talk story” session outlines to help the meetups be productive.

If you pick this project, you cannot name your app “Language Practice”.

Washer Availability

The problem: UH students often waste too much time walking down with a full basket of laundry just to find all the washing machines are in use.

The solution: A web application that allows students to update the status of washing machines in use. This way, students won’t have to walk down and be disappointed when all the washing machines are already in use. The minimal version of this app requires a student to manually use the app to indicate the status of the washers when they are in the room. This status will be displayed in the app with a timestamp, so that students accessing the app from their room can assess the reliability of the information.

Bonus points for building a raspberry pi appliance monitor and automatically updating the status of each machine’s availability on the website.

If you pick this project, you cannot name your app “Washer Availability”.

Off Campus Housing

The problem: Many students at UH Manoa are looking for a place to live off campus and would like to live with other students. Unfortunately, there is no easy way for them to get into contact with each other because they don’t know one another.

The solution: The application allows students to connect with other students who would like to live off campus. The application allows them to find a roommate with similar interests. Students will create their own personal profile with important information such as hobbies, habits, cleanliness, pets, etc. Students can get notified when they have a match. Admins can monitor for inappropriate content and other information.

If you pick this project, you cannot name your app “Off Campus Housing”.

Short-term Jobs

The problem: Around the UH Campus, thousands of students struggle with student loans and/or are in need of some quick cash. Full or part-time jobs can be difficult to maintain, and therefore students would benefit from short-term jobs that last only a few hours or a few days.

The solution: The application allows those in need of student to complete a short-term paid job to advertise the job. The job would be listed with a description, location, contact information, and skills/resources required from the student hired to do it. Students can create a profile with their skills in case someone with a need wants to contact them directly.

If you pick this project, you cannot name your app “Short Term Jobs”.
